In my world, it means to take the components of two separately produced pieces of audio and join them together to make a completely new sense.
Record someone answering the question “Is your boyfriend a competent cook?”
Then replace the original question with one such as “What’s your boyfriend like in the bedroom?”
You end up with a conversation that might go something like
Q: “What’s your boyfriend like in the bedroom?”
A: “He likes to try new things but he makes a mess and leaves me to clean up.”
The Cut and Shut technique enables you to create interesting ads with beautifully delivered answers to extreme questions.
(You must ask permission to use the audio.)
Here's a Cut and Shut ad for a tyre dealer. I phoned the business owners' wives, recorded their answers to a string of questions about their husbands .. then substituted different questions for the finished ads.
